Monday was the only Council meeting scheduled for August. The agenda included a wide variety of items including a proclamation, two ordinances for introduction and several resolutions.

There were more attendees than usual, but that may have been a result of the pro-cannabis flyers that popped up on social media and on cars throughout town encouraging people to attend the meeting.

The meeting started with a proclamation recognizing David Tarby who celebrated 50 years of employment with the Borough. We covered the Proclamation here.

Two Ordinances were presented. The first (#2026-1343) is amending the Borough's code to regulate motor vehicle parking and traffic during a snow emergency. Basically, all cars must be moved off the Borough streets or risk being towed when there is a snow emergency with plowable snow.

The second Ordinance (#2026-1344) was to amend the Borough's code to regulate unlawful rentals. This amended ordinance is working to strengthen the current rules around rental properties. Public comments will take place at the Council meeting on September 14th. You can read the ordinances in their entirety here.

The meeting proceeded through approval of resolutions, committee reports, and then public portion.

A former resident of Manville got up to speak about bringing his cannabis business to town. His comments were very specific to his business and seemed more like a sales pitch rather than public comments. Another resident did get up to speak on the same topic. While she worked in the industry, her comments were focused on the health and other benefits of cannabis. The mayor thanked them for their comments and that topic was closed.

Several other residents stood up to speak regarding the conditions of the ceilings at the library, building in Hillsborough that will impact Manville, and a resident who questioned why they received a zoning violation. A member of the Recreation Committee also spoke asking for volunteers to join the committee as there are openings.

The mayor then announced the need for a closed session, which he indicated would be lengthy. The closed session lasted more than an hour and no action was taken. The meeting was then adjourned.

The next Council meeting is Monday September 14th at 7pm. Residents are encouraged to attend and ask questions.
